Electrical Safety Training – Best Electrical Safety Tips For Your Home
Every home has electricity flowing through it and normally safe however, if you have young children or are planning to do work on you home, you must make sure you have some basic electrical safety training and electrical safety rules. Electricity is a part of modern society however without the proper precautions electricity can kill very easily. This article will give you some very basic electrical safety tips.
Small children love to learn by exploring and touching. Parents and caregivers must diligently remove any electrical hazards in their home and keep their children safe. First remove or repair any loose electrical lines. If you have loose electrical sockets or frayed wires protruding from the wall, you should have the issues fixed by a trained electrician. You can easily find one on the Internet. Also, replace any frayed power cords on electrical appliances you use. In some cases you can have a frayed power cord repaired but you should also consider replacing the appliance completely.
After any electrical wiring issues in your home have been repaired, take some time to learn about electricity and what to do in the case of an emergency. When there are small children in your home you must know what to do in the case of an electrical emergency. Purchase a training DVD that will explain electrical safety in an easy to understand detail. If learning from a DVD is not for you, some communities offer electrical safety training for free through the electrical power company. The goal of learning about electrical safety is to not become an expert in electricity or electrical repair but to gain enough knowledge to be able to react in an emergency.
Now that you have training and the most pressing electrical hazards in your house resolved. Start childproofing your home. Cover all electrical sockets with plastic electrical socket covers to prevent your child from poking items into the sockets. Be sure that the covers you choose to use cannot be removed easily by your children and are large enough that they are not a choking hazard.
Finally, prepare for the possibility of an electrical fire by purchasing a fire extinguisher specially designed for electrical fires. Water should never be used on an electrical fire because the water has the potential to cause the fire to spread. Knowing about electrical safety means being prepared for the possibility of an electrical fire by purchasing a chemical fire extinguisher and checking the charge on your extinguisher yearly.
While chances are you will never need to use your electrical safety training or use your fire extinguisher the knowledge of electrical safety tips in the home is vital to protecting your children. Take the time to take electricity and electrical safety rule serious and your house will be happy and healthy for years to come.

Replacing A Switch Or An Outlet
By Lee Bradford
In this article I’m going to go over basic replacement procedures of outlets and switches.
Always begin any electrical procedure by shutting the breaker off and testing the project with a multitester to confirm that no power is present. On a modern basic light switch there are three wires. One wire is the line wire that comes from the breaker box. Another wire is the load wire that goes to the light fixture or possibly an outlet that is to be controlled by the switch. The third is simply a ground wire that is connected to the side of the switch with a green screw.
The most common reason for replacement of a switch is that it fails to make sufficient contact internally to turn on the lights. Another reason would be an impact to the switch resulting in a break to the toggle or surrounding area. To replace the switch, turn off the breaker and remove the switch plate. Remove the retaining screws and pull the switch forward and remove the wires. Reverse the procedure with your new switch and turn on the power.
An outlet that needs to be replaced is usually a result of an impact. Outlets in open, high traffic areas often suffer regular abuse, particularly in public places where sweepers or buffers are being used. Outlets that provide power to high amperage appliances such as microwaves will occasionally need to be replaced as the internal contacts become less reliable due to overheating.
Basic outlets generally have five wires unless the outlet in question happens to be the last one on the circuit. Aside from the green ground, there will be a black and white wire feeding the top or bottom of the outlet and another white and black leaving the outlet providing power to the next outlet in the circuit.
When you replace an outlet, check to see if the outlet is fifteen or twenty amps and replace it with the same. If you aren’t sure just take it to the hardware store and get some help choosing your new outlet. Replacing an outlet is just like replacing a switch. Turn the breaker off and verify the power is off with a multimeter. Remove the cover plate and the retaining screws and pull the outlet from the box and then the wires from the outlet. Reverse the procedure to reinstall your new outlet.
I hope this has given you some insight regarding switches and outlets. Remember that in any home repair project that safety is the most important aspect. Consult a professional if you ever have doubts about your ability to complete a task.

220 Volt Power Inverter – The Basics of Wattage
By Mark Andrew Plummer
Choosing the right 220 volt power inverter can be confusing, but it doesn’t have to be. Even though there are several choices on the market, selecting the best one is much easier than most people realize. There are two real issues you need to consider when choosing your 220 volt inverter. The first is the signal output. For most people, the extra money spent on a pure sine wave capable system is well worth it and shouldn’t be ignored. The second consideration lies with wattage, and choosing a system with the right wattage limit is vital. If you can understand the basics of wattage, selecting your 220 volt system will be simple.
The wattage limit on your 220 volt sine wave inverter is essentially the maximum amount of watts that it can handle. This limit can be split among multiple items, however. To figure out how large your 220 volt size unit should be, add up the required amperage of each item you want to use with it. If you have one item that needs 1.5 amps and another that needs four, you’ll have a total of 5.5. Multiply the total by 120 and you’ll get a rough idea of your wattage needs. In this example it would be 660, meaning that the wattage of your 220 volt power inverter must be above that number.
It’s also important to note that many items require more watts to start up than they do to run. Your 220 volt inverter will likely have a maximum amount of watts as well as a continuous amount. In most instances the maximum amount can be maintained for a set period of time, normally ten to twenty seconds, in order to give the items the time they need to start up. Look at this number when shopping for a 220 volt power inverter to ensure that you get the inverter that fits your needs adequately.
These are the basics of wattage, and all that you should need in order to choose the right 220 volt power inverter. In most cases, a 220 volt inverter purchased for car, boat, or RV use will need no more than one thousand watts. Home systems or those for commercial use can range from 1500 up to 8000 watts, depending upon the exact needs of the owner. If you don’t know the specific wattage needs you’ll face, using your best judgment and these guidelines can help.

So what does it take to become a journeyman electrician in Texas. It mostly boils down to hands on experience under the supervision of a master electrician. Here are the exact numbers:
8,000 hours. That equals about 4 years. The electricians in the field may feel like that is forever, but the time provides much needed experience. It gives them plenty of opportunity to see most all of the problems that present themselves. In this four years an apprentice electrician will grow and become an expert.
The journeyman's test is not difficult if you head into it well prepared. There are several preparation courses in the Houston area. I would highly recommend that you take one of these. If at the very least they will put you in the testing mode!

Jimmy Bankston

For those of us who are lucky enough to have an outdoor area of our very own, properly landscaping this area can create a living environment that can be enjoyed and rewarding for years to come. Whether you have a large yard or even just a small piece of yard off a backyard patio, the options for landscaping are endless. But before you head out to the local home and garden market for shrubbery and lawn enhancements, you should examine exactly what type of outdoor landscaping ideas you wish to implement and the maintenance factor that will come with your new yard.
There are new do it yourself kits now available, for example building your own gazebo that can take just a couple of hours to assemble and look like a million dollars. Visit your neighborhood garden center they may have displays and helpful employees to steer you in the right direction.
Measure the space you want to redesign. Put the dimensions on paper. Include the part of your house facing the yard with doors and windows noted. Layout where you would like to have a garden or play area or possibly a water feature.
Yes, you can install a water feature in just one weekend and with minimal cost if you are willing to do a little digging and move a few large rocks into place. Have a barbecue and invite a few of your friends over to help. There are pond and waterfall kits available that are easy to install.
Your local climate will have a tremendous impact on the type of landscaping that you should have in place. Flowering plants that require a great deal of humidity will not thrive in a dry climate. While there are some plants that will need direct sunlight, there are others that prefer a shaded area in order to grow. If you are not proficient in the different types of flowers and plants that are best for your area, be sure to utilize local resources in order to check out the best selections for your planning purposes.
Easy care, low maintenance plants and construction materials is what you should look for if you do not want to be chained to your backyard. Most of us want a place to barbecue and entertain but don't like the raking, weeding, trimming etc.
The key to landscaping is to not be afraid to try something new. Not all yards need to have a grassy area. Grass is so high maintenance. Try using different types of rock and paver for pathways and sitting areas. The visual interest will be heightened with plants of different sizes, shapes and colors.
Just because you are not an expert gardener does not mean you cannot plan out beautiful and easy landscaping ideas for the yard and garden. You will build your confidence, as well as your muscles, when you have completed your backyard project.

Seems like a simple task, getting an electrical reconnect permit. Usually it is, but sometimes it can open up a whole list of troubles. Let me explain. If a property has been vacant for a while, and the power has been turned off then the city of Houston and Center Pointe energy will require that an electrical reconnect permit be pulled. This permit must be pulled by a licensed Houston electrical contractor. But in order for an electrical contractor to pull the permit, he must first make sure that the properties electrical system will pass the inspection. So an in depth electrical inspection must be performed. He will be looking to make sure that the electrical system meets NEC code.
Once the electrical inspection ha been completed, then the master electrician goes to the city of Houston and pulls a reconnect permit. This is normally a fairly quick and trouble free step. One problem we have run into is that there be a hold on the property due to incomplete permits previously pulled at a property. What does this mean? Say you purchased a has to flip. It’s in pretty good shape, the prior owner told you he did all the work himself. With a little elbow grease on your part, you can have it revamped and up for sale in a matter of weeks. BUT and here’s the big BUT, he forgot to tell you he had a buddy pull the permit, and no inspections were done along the way. So the city of Houston shows an outstanding permit for plumbing, and electrical, but it has never been called in for an inspection. They won’t release the reconnect permit untill all of the permits have been released prior to the new one. So now you are in a major jam- the walls are covered up, there is no way for a city inspector to green tag it if he can’t see it. Now, major work is involved, and a boat load of money.
Moral to this story, is to be sure and check with the city permit division before buying a used home. Make sure there are no outstanding permits on the property. If there are, make sure that they are completed before the purchase goes through so you don’t inherit anther persons problems.
How do we know about all this? One of our clients called us today to have the power reconnected to the home he just bought- he got a really great deal, or so he thought.
