Journeyman Electrician Requirements in Texas

So what does it take to become a journeyman electrician in Texas.  It mostly boils down to hands on experience under the supervision of a master electrician.  Here are the exact numbers:Jimmy-Bankston-Master-Electrician

  • 8,000 hours of on-the-job training under the supervision of a master electrician
  • Passing score on the journeyman electrician examination

8,000 hours. That equals about 4 years.  The electricians in the field may feel like that is forever, but the time provides much needed experience.  It gives them plenty of opportunity to see most all of the problems that present themselves.  In this four years an apprentice electrician will grow and become an expert.

The journeyman's test is not difficult if you head into it well prepared. There are several preparation courses in the Houston area. I would highly recommend that you take one of these.  If at the very least they will put you in the testing mode!

Electrician Killed in the UK

Ran across this story today on a blog devoted to electrical accidents.  Just thought I would share. Be careful when you work with electricity!

Christopher Partridge, aged 55, from Northampton, was electrocuted as he fixed a street light inside the entrance of Blisworth Park, a mobile home site in Blisworth Arm.

He fell from a ladder yesterday lunchtime and hit his head on the ground, where he was pronounced dead by police.

Police cordoned off the area while representatives from Environmental Health and the Health and Safety Executive began an investigation.

The man had been an electrician for 15 years on-and-off at the site, which houses around 80 homes.

How to Choose the Perfect Electrical Contractor

Finding just the right electrician to service your home’s electrical system can be a daunting and often frustrating task.  But there are a few simple things a homeowner can look for when making the decision.

When choosing an electrical contractor it is important to make your choice carefully.

There are a few things to look for when making the decision:

1)      Make sure that the electrical contractor company and the electrician himself are both licensed.  For example in the State of Texas an electrical contractor is required to be licensed.  For the contractor to get the license, specific requirements must be met. One of the requirements is general liability insurance. This is very important.  In the event of a mishap at your home, you would be protected by the contractor’s liability insurance.

2)      Is an actual master electrician working at the company?  There are a few master electricians that will sell their license to a company without one.  This is illegal, but all too common.  What do I mean by sell?  Say a journeyman electrician wants to open his own company. Legally he can’t. You have to have a master electrician’s license to get a contractor’s license.  So the journeyman calls up his buddy who has the master’s license and says, “Hey I’ll give you $500 if I can use you as my master.”  The master says, “Sure thing, just bring me the form and I will sign off.” It’s that simple, bam-the inexperienced journeyman is now an electrical contractor!  Beware of these companies.

3)      If the prospective company passes the license criteria, then the next thing is to look for references.  In this day and age you can learn a lot by “Googling” the company name.  Take a look and see, are most of the comments positive?  How about the company’s website, do they offer a list of references?  If they do, by all means pick up the phone and call a few.  You may be surprised to find out what you learn.

4)    Another criterion is to find a company that uses background screening before hiring employees.  Do you really want a child molester  or a convicted felon in your home? A reputable contractor will not hire a convicted felon-there is just too much liability involved. If the company is concerned enough to background screen its employees it is likely that they are drug tested as well.  These are two very important factors in my book.

5)    Last but not least when the contractor drives up to your home, he should be in a clearly marked, well maintained vehicle.  If they drive up in a beat up pickup that hasn’t been washed in a year this is a direct reflection upon their character.  The electrician that knocks on your door should be clean, well-groomed, and dressed in a company uniform.  If they are not I would send them away and look for another contractor.

By following these simple steps, you can rest assured that you will find a trustworthy and dependable electrician with whom you can establish a relationship for years to come.

Light Bulb Changers-Do They Work?

Light Bulb Changers- These magic little tools seem like a really smart invention.  They allow homeowners to reach & replace light bulbs in high places.  With this changer tool, supposedly, you can unscrew the old bulb and then replace it with a new one.  You’d think they would work like a charm.

Want to know a little secret from a master electrician? They don’t work.  They break the light bulb at its base leaving the bottom portion of the bulb still screwed into the fixture.  When the bulb breaks it shoots glass all over the area.  At this point it becomes impossible to use the light bulb changer tool to remove what is remaining of the bulb.

Now if you have the tools and the know-how a home owner can usually fix this problem himself.

You will need:

  • A-frame ladder tall enough to reach the light comfortably and safely
  • pair of needle nose pliers
  • pair of gloves
  • pair of safety glasses
  • trash pail
  • replacement bulbs

The first order of business is to turn the power off to the lighting circuit at the breaker. Extreme caution needs to be used when opening the panel and touching the breakers. If you feel uncomfortable opening the breaker panel, then stop and call an electrician.

The next step is to turn the light switch to the off position as well.  Position the ladder so it is in position to reach the fixture.  Put on your gloves and safety glasses.  Then take your needle nose pliers and gently grab the metal edge of the bulb that is remaining in the fixture. Turn it slowly to unscrew the bulb. Dispose of the broken piece in your trash pail.  From here you can install the replacement bulb.

The biggest obstacle to the whole process is usually the ladder.  Most homeowners just don’t have a ladder tall enough to reach the fixture.

So what is a homeowner to do?

Well, you could rent a ladder or you could purchase a ladder.  But the easiest solution would be to call a local electrician.  Electricians usually have the extra tall ladders needed to reach these light bulbs and they keep a complete stock of bulbs on their truck.

An electrician can get the job done quickly and safely for a reasonable fee.
